Eve Fan Fiction: Short story writing blogfest?

I love writing, and I love reading good stories.

Having started writing my own novel recently, I have found that it is good practice to write the occasional short story. Recently, I had some inspiration to write a short story in the Eve universe for the recent Blog Banter number 12 and had an absolute ball.

Having also read a number of other role-play short stories (such as the one I linked of Mynxee’s recently) I have thought that it would be interesting to propose a regular fiction writing event for eve bloggers that way inclined.

I also know there would be a few people in the eve online forums themselves that write fan fiction but do not run a blog. perhaps that would get them interested.

My proposal is this:

Every month, in a similar style to Crazy Kinux’s blog banters, a topic would be proposed and those interested would write a short story in the Eve universe.

Further, I was thinking that every so often (perhaps once every quarter) it could be made into a competition, to be judged by the participants with donated prizes, or perhaps an entry fee of 10 mil isk or so with the winner taking the pot.

There is certainly no shortage of role-playing subject matter in the game if you look hard enough on the forums. heck – you can get ideas for stories just by looking around you.

I’d like to propose the first topic to be the following:

“Write the story of the life of a stripper in this Minmatar station.”:

Photobucket

Was she a stripper before comming to the station or did she fall into bad company? An ex-slave perhaps? Has she seen a capsuleer? what was that encounter like? what are her hopes and dreams? is she dissolusioned with life in a space station? is she trying to pay off a debt or support her family back on an impoverished plannet?

The scope is there for some awesome short stories.

I’d really appreciate comments on this one – even if you’re not interested in writing Fan fiction such as this, if you like reading it, please add your suggestions. (or, if I’ve completely missed something already in place similar to this, feel free to point it out).

Ill write a short for ya about the minnie stationed stripper πŸ™‚ Ill post it to Eve Inline when completed πŸ™‚

I do think this is a great idea Akura. I think others have toyed with the thought before but I’m not sure why it hasn’t really gotten off the ground. Then again, few bloggers have as much exposure as CK when it comes to rallying troops.

I’ll think about how I can help. Meanwhile, I’ll link this post up so it gets a few more eyes.

Thanks for that – I think it should go well, depending on how many we get. I’m going to continue in any case – one short story per month shouldn’t be too hard πŸ™‚

Great idea! I’ll definitely take part, and I’ll plug you on my blog. I’ll also try and get an EVE Tribune article together if the editor is okay with it. You should definitely try and get CK to plug you though, or even ISD. Would help no end.

This is a fantastic idea, though I think that if you do it monthly like the Blog Banter, the topic should go out at the beginning of the month, with posting being scheduled for the end (or something with the same amount of time) so that those of us who have issues writing sometimes can get it done. I know Keldar Anassi (the old EVE Guru blog in the blog pack) tried to get one like this off the ground, lack of involvement is what killed it.

I will toss up a link on my blog as well.

actually – that’s something I forgot to say specifically chainer but I did have a one month window in mind like you said. sometimes fiction takes a while to write. πŸ™‚ I’ll go chat CK to see if I can get a plug on there. by the way – if anyone writes one of those – post a comment here so I/everyone can link to your post.

also like to say: I think it would be best to keep the topics broad like the above one, rather than specific in order to keep variety in the posts.

  8. October 4, 2009 at 23:50

I would say follow CK’s lead on getting emails of those interested and mailing each of them with the new topics as well as a list of other participants to help direct traffic to others.

I agree with emailing folks to remind them. People get really busy and basically you must simply push them a bit. I would probably participate if you were to select themes that weren’t too limiting. I enjoy writing IC fiction very much, but for some reason haven’t felt much of an urge to do so lately. Should probably revisit Mynx’s history and flesh her stories about growing up out a little.

great! – it’s settled then, if you all would like to be included on the list of e-mail recipients, just send me an e-mail at akurakawanaka (at) gmail (dot com) and we’ll get this rolling – think we already have 3 or 4 people who are going to do it, a couple of people have told me in-game also so I think it’s going to be awesome πŸ™‚

  11. October 8, 2009 at 13:00

I’d be interested in this, but I have to agree with Mynxee. We are all very busy with real life and our EVE lives. Email reminders would be helpful and a broader writing prompt would also be useful.

As for that stripper, she’s a covert agent for Hellcats who likes to dance and take people’s money. She is the one exploiting everyone, not the other way around. πŸ˜›

yep – having mostly written my first one, I don’t think I realised how much it takes out of you and how long it takes to make it good. perhaps every 2 months would be better. if you send me a mail ga’len – I’ll add you to the mailing list.

as for the topic – what do you think about that one in the post? I thought it was pretty broad (that was the aim in any case – having all the stories similar would be no fun), but I’m open to suggestions.

For anyone still reading these comments: I’d like for the first stories to be published on the last day of October. Then we can get some feedback to see if once a month is too much and we need to make it once every two months. Also some feedback about the topics chose would be great. I’d also like if we rotate choosing the topic, like the blog pack if a different person could come up with an idea every month/two months, it would keep it interesting πŸ™‚ Don’t forget to mail me if you’d like to be kept in the loop.

Hey! Just saw this, thanks to osmosis (Rettic via Casiella on Twitter). Love to take a crack at this, so to get out of the habit of damaging people with my other fiction.

    I’ll send you an e-mail.

Caught up on this due to your comment on my blog. Great concept and I can merge in a current story idea right into it.

This whole thing should be awesome!!

I can’t find your e-mail on your blog – if you want to send me on at akurakawanaka (at) gmail (dotcom) I’ll send you what I’ve sent the others – good to have you!

That’s the plan – or sometime from today. just e-mail or post the perma-link here so I can consolidate them all. We’re putting a little blurb at the top explaining what it’s all about and linking back to this post, then at the bottom leave a bit of a footer for the links to other participants.

also send suggestions for next month’s topic!

    Akura-

So sorry I’m late to the party. I got called for last minute travel for work, and this slipped under the “rug”. Got the piece ready to go, just need to get it up on my site. I’m hoping to have it in next day or so.
